Quotes per day and their meanings

April 1 –"Tennis and Boxing have a strange kinship.” - Bud Collins

 

“Two individuals going head-to-head probing for weaknesses and attacking it. Footwork, timing, and stamina are essential. Just you and your opponent until one of you is beaten. There’s no brain damage in tennis- although sometimes I wonder”.

When playing, we can start playing better just by focusing on moving better on the tennis court.

April 3 – Footwork is one of the primary prerequisites to becoming a great player.” -Mike Krzyzewski

 

Every sport requires intensity with the footwork.

​

April 4 —"Footwork is the biggest element in any sport.” - Jordan Rodgers

 

The complete quote is, “Footwork is the biggest element in any sport because if it's off, it will mess with your mechanics.”

April 7 –  “A tennis match is a thousand little sprints” - Bjorn Borg

 

During a tennis match. You must sprint for every ball to position yourself well to strike the ball. Then, it would help if you sprinted back to prepare for the next ball. “Intensity without playing tense”.

April 8 – “We win matches with our feet.”

 

Sometimes, we may match our opponent in skill, but our footwork often sets us apart. Chasing down more balls than the opponent 

can be the deciding factor.

April 9- "Tennis is a lower body game.”

 

When the lower body fails to execute a movement correctly, such as reaching the ball to maintain good balance, the upper body must compensate by leaning forward, lunging backward, and so on.

When mistakes creep into your game, your first thought should move quicker to the ball. Set up for your shot quicker, and your results will improve.

Movement involves advancing towards the point of contact and recovering from it—preparing for the subsequent action.

Covering a wide area of the court makes it challenging for the opponent to land a winning shot, thereby exerting pressure on them. They are forced to target smaller areas due to your effective court coverage, which may lead to more errors on their part.

You should be practicing and working hard or playing a match by playing every point, not resting and going into a "walk about."

When you have a low bouncing ball coming towards you, you need to get lower to the contact point. Bending the knees is essential, but you must have a wider stance with your legs; this will give you better balance during the stroke. 

​

April 17th- “Split-Steps A Gather and Go.” - Don Paitrick

 

The split step is designed to collect your balance, enabling you to move in the direction of your opponent's attempted passing shot.

​

April 18- “Split Step, NOT a split stop."

 

So many players are making a split step, a split stop. A split step is like a "Yield" sign when driving; the yield sign says to slow down, check the traffic, and then merge into traffic. Coming to the net, split when the opponent hits the ball and merge to where they aimed it. 

​

April 21 – "Adjustment steps followed by a balance step."

 

One fundamental principle to remember regarding footwork in tennis is the importance of taking small adjustment steps when moving to a ball you will strike. By taking these small steps, you can prevent running too close to the contact point, which can throw off your shot.
In addition to taking small adjustment steps, it's also essential to follow them with a balance step. The balance step is used right before you hit the ball and involves taking a step slightly wider than your shoulders. This wider step helps to transfer your weight into the shot, giving you more power and control.

April 22- “Hips and hands, step if you can." Curly Davis

 

When setting up for contact, our hands should turn and take the racket back. Additionally, the Hips should be "coiling" to add power. If you have time to step forward to the ball (weight transfer), do so. If not, uncoil into the contact with the hips and hands. 

​

April 23-  "Hard work makes dreams come true."

 

If you want to be the best at whatever you do and dream BIG, you must bring a work element to your endeavor. 

​

April 24 – “When your legs can’t run anymore, run with your heart.”

 

When you think you can’t take that next step, run with your desire to accomplish your goal. 

​

April 25 –  “Proper footwork leads to proper technique.” - Curly Davis

 

You may have the best-looking strokes, but you will struggle with your strokes if you have poor footwork. Arrive at the contact early and set up the body; you will have time to practice the proper technique.  

​

April 28  –  “Feet move so you can swing smooth.” - Greg Carter

 

You move to the ball quickly, then you must swing effortlessly. 

​

April 29 – “Create Space.”

 

When making your swing, you must make space between you and the ball. 

​

We must play intensely and go for every ball. Your effort will discourage the opponent. You will not lose with such effort, even if the score doesn’t reflect it.
